Fitness and Recreation

Los Banos, named for seasonal spring baths that feed natural wetlands, offers an abundance of outdoor activities. The San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area is popular for boating, board sailing, watersports, equestrian, off-road motorcycle trails, camping, picnicking, and fishing. With over 2,000 acres of wetland wildlife habitat and over 7,000 acres of grasslands and other habitat, The Merced National Wildlife Refuge is popular for birdwatching and appreciating nature’s beauty. The vast San Luis National Wildlife Refuge encompasses over 26,800 acres of wetlands and native grasslands and hosts thriving populations of many species. The Refuge features eight nature trails and three auto tour routes, where visitors can view daily the Tule Elk and a host of other local wildlife. The Los Banos Wildlife Area, encompassing 6,217 acres, is also a popular destination for fishing, hunting, camping, walking nature trails, or cycling.

The Los Banos Unified School District is composed of seven elementary schools, one junior high school (grades 7-8), one comprehensive high school, one alternative high school and one community day school and can be reached at (209) 826-6033. The LBUSD recently broke ground on a new Junior High School near the Southbrook community, anticipated to open in the 2016-17 school year. LBUSD is growing and is focused on becoming a destination district. Larry Anderson, founder and president of Anderson Homes, donated the land for the nearby Los Banos Campus of Merced Community College, which opened in 2007 and is a wonderful asset for the community. Community Events

With 51 parks, 26 playgrounds, 27 churches, and 89 community clubs/organizations, there is a diversity of groups who care about the vitality of their community in Los Banos (Source: Los Banos Chamber of Commerce). Popular community events include the May Day Spring Fair, downtown street fairs, movies in the Park at the Henry Miller Plaza, and the Los Banos Tomato Festival. Los Banos has an enjoyable climate with the average high temperature in the summer months around 90 degrees Fahrenheit, making for great outdoor Summer evenings. The average low temperature in the winter months is around 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
